"Paul Graham, founder of Y-Combinator, declares Microsoft is dead. Paul must be living in a cave somewhere, or drunk on the Web 2.0 Kool-Aid. Paul obviously wrote his headline to grab attention and attract links to his blog. TechMeme shows that he succeeded.

For the record, Microsoft is growing revenues at over $4 Billion a year and is on track for $50 Billion this year. Since when does growing $4 Billion a year equal DEAD? If that is dead I know a lot of companies that would like to be so dead.

" E-commerce companies must strive to understand the changing physical, cognitive, and social requirements of their customers. The older demographic is the fastest growing worldwide [10, 15, 16, 20] and also the fastest growing online [8, 13]. In many countries, this aging trend is driven by the increase in birth rate that occurred after World War II. This generation is often defined as those born between 1946 and 1964 and includes the U.S. "baby boomers" and the Japanese "dankai no sedai" (clumped generation). As this generation ages, the average age of the population will rise, and so will the incidence of impairments that influence how people use the Web including visual (cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, etc.), auditory (presbycusis, otosclerosis), motor (arthritis, stroke), neurodegenerative (Parkinson's disease), and cognitive (Alzheimer's disease) impairments. In the U.S. alone, over 14 million adults have some type of visual impairment and 28 million have some type of hearing loss (10 million of whom are over the age of 65). In addition to the changing demographics, international and domestic laws [12, 17, 18] are becoming ever more stringent, requiring equal access to information on the Web for all users, including those with disabilities. Cookie deletion

Frequent cookie deletion by three out of 10 U.S. Internet users leads to overstatements in audience sizes by as much as 150 percent, according to a study by comScore Inc. Reston, VA-based comScore said the study analyzed the validity of using cookie-based data to measure the number of unique visitors to individual Web sites or to gauge the number of unique users who were served an ad by an ad server.

Today,Yahoo! and 12 leading U.S. newpaper companies announced a formal agreement to use Yahoo! as their exclusive paid search partner, and bring local newspaper content to 150 MM U.S. visitors per month.

The latest addition to the consortium is the McClatchy Company, making it the 12th member of the newspaper publishing group. This group represents more than 264 newspapers across 44 states.

The McClatchy Company is among the latest newspaper groups to join the consortium, currently participating in all aspects except the HotJobs component. Other new members since November 2006 include Calkins Media, Inc.; Media General, Inc.; Morris Communications Company, LLC; and Paddock Publications, Inc.

Consortium members announced last November include: Belo Corp.; Cox Newspapers; The E.W. Scripps Company; Hearst Newspapers; Journal Register Company; Lee Enterprises; and MediaNews Group, Inc. Geeks and Audience Mesures

Comscore's audience statistics, which advertising agencies use to decide how to allocate campaign budgets, are already uncomfortable reading for many websites. Compared with a site's own internal logs, the New York company's user panel can appear to significantly undercount monthly visitors. The news just got worse. According to an internal study, the company is double-counting the geekier users who delete the cookies which track their web usage, and thereby show up, repeatedly, as new users. The bottom line? Even Comscore's modest numbers may be overstating a site's audience by a factor of 2.5, on average. And the geekier sites, already the ones that complain most that old-school measurement services miss their gigantic audiences, have the most inflated numbers.
